Art can have many different elements. In ceramics, I find that simplicity mixed with complexity forms a well balanced project. For example, a project with many different widths and shapes within it can be complimented nicely with a simple glaze to bring out the unique elements. A simple project with not a lot of texture or shape can have a complex glaze to make it unique. I find that when I glaze a complex project numerous colors, the project often comes out looking busy.
I use this theme of simplicity v.s complexity in several of my projects. With one of my projects, i threw using red and white clay. Combining the two types of clay gives the project a swirl effect. Since this color combo is very unique, I threw a simple bowl to balance it out. The projects simple features is complimented by the natural color of the two different clays.
Another project I followed my theme with was my lidded project. My lidded project is relatively small. It has a small base and progressively gets wider and then comes back in slightly to form the lip. The lid sits inside the lip with a knob on top. The projects simple white glaze accentuates its many features.
When making my theme project I tried to focus on using the strategy of creating complex projects with simple glazes. Throughout the year I have experimented with many different types of glazes as well as many different shapes of projects. I found that when I created projects with many different shapes within them, and then glazed them multiple colors, they came out looking like a mess. The colors would cloud the different shapes making it hard to focus on the pot itself.
Throughout the year I have progressed greatly. This theme has kept me on track and allowed me to create the best projects possible. I find that my best projects are very simple ones that I spend a lot of time on. In the beggining of the year I would stick to creating very simple projects and not experimenting with the different shapes. By the end of the year, I am now able to create projects with several different shapes within them.
